Destination of the Day: Market Square, Brantford, ON

Destination 5 in the series "R.I.P."

Opened: 1986.  Closed: Not formally.  Originally named Eaton Market Square, this mall was one of several jointly developed by an Ontario downtown renewal program and Eaton's, a major department store chain.  While some of the downtown centers were highly successful (Toronto Eaton Centre) many more slowly faded away.  One only needs to visit Sarnia, Kitchener, Chatham-Kent, London, or Guelph.  Ontario was not the only one to error.  In Michigan Flint, Detroit, Muskegon, and Battle Creek all experimented with enclosed malls or festival centers.  But before one points a finger at public-private projects just visit many mid-sized cities and the number of nearly vacant shopping centers (i.e. Michigan City).
