Destination of the Day: 'Secretariat', filmed in Louisville and Lexington, KY

Destination 1 in the series "Ready for my close-up"

Plot (from Wikipedia): Housewife and mother Penny Chenery (Diane Lane) agrees to take over her ailing father’s Virginia-based Meadow Stables, despite her lack of horse-racing knowledge. With the help of veteran trainer Lucien Laurin (John Malkovich), Chenery manages to navigate the male-dominated business, ultimately fostering the first Triple Crown winner in 25 years and what may be one of the greatest racehorses of all time.

Series of the Week: "Ready for my close-up"

While frequent film darlings New York (or more likely, Toronto) and Los Angeles are the backdrops for far too many films, a growing number producers and directors are finding the Great Lakes & Upper South regions camera ready.   With the help of generous tax incentives, a variety of locations (major dense and busy cities, coasts, small towns), and the help of a few big name actors and directors from the area the region has seen a major increase in film crews.   This week the GLCT heads to the cinema to highlight films shot in the Great Lakes.

If you would like to contribute to this series contact me at rmaihoferii@gmail.com. Include your name, the establishment, a short description, and a photo if you have one.

Bonus Destination of the Day: National First Ladies' Library, Canton, OH

Destination 6 in the series "Hail"

The Presidents'/Prime Ministers' club is a small and nearly all male (among other things) club.  While many of the libraries and museums include exhibits about the First Lady the exhibit is often not a very complete picture of the role and the person.  This Canton, OH, museum is focused on collecting and preserving the information on all First Ladies.  The main building was the home of First Lady Ida Saxton McKinley.

Destination of the Day: Lincoln Home National Historic Site, Springfield, IL

Destination 5 in the series "Hail"

I have said this before and will say it again: Springfield, IL, is by far one of the best small city vacation destinations and for Lincoln devotees, their DisneyWorld!  To start with the city has frequent Amtrak service from both Chicago and Saint Louis for either a day trip or a long weekend.  Two convention hotels are a few blocks from the station.  Finally, most of Springfield's attractions are within the downtown area.  Seasonal shuttle service connects the major other attractions and there is a special bus route for the state fair.  For more information on the city visit http://www.visit-springfieldillinois.com/

President Lincoln, much like Canada's Mr. Mackenzie King, is considered by historians as one of the greatest leaders of his country.  Lincoln grew up as a poor farm boy, became a self-taught lawyer, was elected to the state legislature, and on 4 March 1861 was sworn in as the 16th President of the United States.  Just over a month later Confederate troops attacked Fort Sumter.  His most well known documents include the Emancipation Proclamation and Gettysburg Address.  His life was taken by an assassin only days after the formal end of the war.

Destination of the Day: Woodside National Historic Site of Canada, Kitchener, ON

Destination 4 in the series "Hail"

Quick, who is the current Canadian PM and what is his/her party  (see end of the entry for the answer)?  William Lyon Mackenzie King is not the current PM, but is the longest serving PM with terms spanning from 1921 to 1948.  From accounts he was not one of the world's great communicators yet was able to lead Canada through several major events because of his timing and intellect.  Unlike Harding reputation with US historians, Mr. Mackenzie King has been repeatedly ranked the greatest Canadian Prime Minister by Canadian historians.  Woodside is his boyhood home.

Series of the Week: "Hail"

Monday, 21 February, is President's Day in the United States.  According to Wikipedia the region has produced 11 presidents, the most recent being President Obama.  Southwest Ontario has had the honor of producing two Prime Ministers.   Many more spent a considerable amount of time living in the region.  Fortunately a number of these home sites have been preserved and protected by historical societies or park services and open to explore and enjoy.

Series of the Week: "All Downhill"

With one of the snowiest winters in years there is plenty (or maybe too much!) of the white stuff to enjoy.  While some of largest and best known skiing and snow boarding areas are located in the Canadian and U.S. Rockies, the Great Lakes & Upper South also has a nice selection for amateurs and experts alike.  This series is also going to be a bit of a departure for previous series since much of what we will discover this week will even be new to me!  So strap on the boots, grab your gloves, and get ready to enjoy a long and fun day on the slopes.

If you would like to contribute to this series contact me at rmaihoferii@gmail.com. Include your name, the establishment, a short description, and a photo if you have one.

Destination of the Day: Air Zoo, Kalamazoo, MI

Destination 5 in the series "Winter Blahs"

Part air museum, part indoor amusement park the Air Zoo now spans the original building and a massive new main hall complete with gift shop, viewing area, restaurant, and plenty of space to expand.  The rides do seem to overwhelm the impressive collection of aircraft, including a SR-71 Blackbird, F-14 Tomcat, and a Curtiss P-40 Warhawk, but at least the rides will help keep part of the group happy while the other view the aircraft.  The original building's exhibits feel a bit dated and some of the aircraft are packed in tightly.

The museum is located in the southern suburb of Portage.  While mass transit system has routes that go near the museum an autoless CTer may be better off taking a cab.
