Destination of the Week: Springfield, IL

Destination of the Week: Springfield, IL

Summary:
Ever since my first visit to Springfield in 2006, I have been pleasantly surprised how the city has improved and become more welcoming to tourists.  This once sleepy state capital now is home to a major presidential library and national historic site, plus a number of relocated or improved museums.  Most are within walking distance of the well maintained, but somewhat limited, number of downtown hotels.  When planning your Springfield getaway, double check hours and days some historic sites and attractions are open.  Some may have limited hours during the off-season and on Sundays.

For those living on the Amtrak Chicago-St. Louis line, Springfield may make for a great day-trip once construction is complete on the new, higher speed, tracks.
