Destination of the Day: Quad Cities, IA-Figge Art Museum

Destination of the Day: Quad Cities, IA-Figge Art Museum

In a downtown full of mostly early 20th Century buildings, the Figge’s modernist building stands out.  Fortunately the collection is nearly as bold and accessible as the building. Making lemonade out of lemons, the museum currently houses the University of Iowa’s relocated art collection, forced to move due to a 2008 flood.  Just do not plan to grab a bite to eat as the restaurant space is dark.   In case you are not listening to the guide, start at the top floor and work down.

Destination of the Day: Frankenmuth Area, MI-Bronner's CHRISTmas Wonderland

Destination of the Day: Frankenmuth Area, MI-Bronner's CHRISTmas Wonderland

There are Christmas stores, but this is THE Christmas store.  I have yet to make a visit and not spend at least 2.5 hours wondering the displays.  During your visit make at least 30 minutes to view one of three welcome videos.  Dated, but still worth the time to learn more about the family and institution.  A few short steps away is the Silent Night Chapel, a replica of the Silent Night Chapel in Germany.  If you can wait until after dusk, do a drive-by of the complex to see one heck of a light presentation.

Destination of the Day: Toledo, OH-National Museum of the Great Lakes

Destination of the Day: Toledo, OH-National Museum of the Great Lakes

Yes folks, there are a FEW museums I have not yet visited and this is one of them.  Opened in late April, the museum replaces a center in suburban Cleveland.  At 10,500 square feet, it should provide a few hours of education on our great inland seas.  The museum’s collection includes the ore freighter SS Col. James M. Schoonmaker.

GLCT:  If you have visited, please feel free to comment!

Destination of the Day: Springfield, IL-Illinois State Museum, Springfield

Destination of the Day: Springfield, IL-Illinois State Museum, Springfield

While all state museums tend to be similar, they still are a must visit!  A special bonus with the Illinois museum are its visitation times, often open hours before other area attractions, giving you extra time to visit the city.  The exhibits are well maintained and should provide for an educational experience.  A kid’s play space in the basement is perfect if your little one needs a short diversion.  Don’t miss the top floor’s exhibits!
