Northern Indiana is probably not on too many under-65 vacation lists, but that does not mean a GLCTer cannot find a full weekend or more of fun. The small villages of Middlebury and Shipshewana make up the heart of the Amish section of this tourism region. This section presents enough bakeries, convention hotels, stores full of handmade furniture, gift shops, and wholesome plays (‘Josiah for President!’) for a fun and laid-back day. The Angola and Fremont section offers state parks, camp reports, water parks, a third-rate outlet mall, and even a winery! One plus of the area is its central location to a number of Midwestern cities, which is especially helpful if planning a family reunion.
A special note about Shipshewana and Middlebury hotels-CAREFULLY read the hotel rules. Many have considerable restrictions on alcohol, even inside private rooms.
