The Michigan Science Center’s history tracks Detroit’s history a little too closely. Once named the Detroit Science Center, some major missteps caused the museum to close and declare bankruptcy. Days before the artifacts and displays were to go to auction, a local leader purchased the collection, restarted a new group, and reopened the museum. Nowadays the museum is a center of activity. On my Friday visit school groups were arriving by the busloads. While it made photo taking tricky, it was great to see kids enjoying the complex.
Note: Surprisingly, parking can be difficult in and around the Cultural Center neighborhood. There are a few off-street parking lots, but can fill quickly if there is a major program at one or more of the museums. Also, the on-site restaurant offers a very limited selection.
