Joliet has seen its share of amazing American history, include the Illinois & Michigan Canal, Route 66, wartime factories, and Chicago sprawl.  For a smaller city, the history museum is surprising well deigned and enjoyable.  Located downtown, it also provides an excuse to see the many historic buildings lining silent streets.

The museum is about 39.5 miles/0 hours, 52 minutes by car from downtown Chicago.  The Metra Joliet Union Station is about 0.4 miles away.

Destination of the Week: Chicago-Will County, IL

Destination of the Week: Chicago-Will County, IL

Summary:
Known for its farms, warehouse parks, state and federal nature parks, and one of the largest NASCAR racing complexes, Will County overall feels a bit more blue collar than most suburban communities.  Located south of Chicago, the county provides cheap land and decent downtown rail service.  Lacking Lake Michigan access, the county does offer nature lovers a number of state parks, many with camping, and federal prairie habitats.  If antique shopping is more your thing, downtown Wilmington has a number of small shops and Route 66 themed restaurants and bars.  For culture and history buffs, downtown Joliet has an informative history museum and Lockport’s Gaylord Building hosts the I & M Canal Welcome Center.

Go if you like:

Destination of the Week: Chicago-Lake County, IL-Clockwise Theatre

Destination of the Week: Chicago-Lake County, IL-Clockwise Theatre

Offering a refreshing mix of Midwest and world premier plays, the Clockwise Theatre is a perfect complement to the other two theatres in downtown Waukegan.  Unfortunately downtown Waukegan offers few companion options (bars, restaurants, clubs) so do a little research in advance.

The theatre is about 41 miles/1 hour, 4 minutes by car from downtown Chicago.  The Metra Waukegan Station is about 0.5 miles away.

Destination of the Week: Chicago-Lake County, IL-Genesee Theatre

Destination of the Week: Chicago-Lake County, IL-Genesee Theatre

Located in quiet (and this is not a compliment) downtown Waukegan, Genesee Theatre is one of many restored grand theatres in suburban Chicago.  Mostly featuring smaller traveling music and comedy performers and low budget theatre companies, the Genesee’s offers nice, but not great, evening entertainment.

Destination of the Week: Chicago-Lake County, IL-Volo Auto Museum

Destination of the Week: Chicago-Lake County, IL-Volo Auto Museum

Part tourist trap, part car collector dealership, the Volo Auto Museum occupies a unique place among auto museums.  For the price of admission, one gets the honor of touring a high-end classic car lot!  In addition to the hundreds of autos available to view and buy there are a number of vehicles from or inspired by U.S. films and television shows, including a The Dukes of Hazzard General Lee, a limo used by Princess Diana, and Batman television series Batmobile.  This might be a good option if you enjoy classic cars, but not necessarily automotive history.

The museum is about 56 miles/1 hour, 15 minutes by car from downtown Chicago.
