Destination of the Week: Chicago-Hyde Park, IL-DuSable Museum of African American History

Destination of the Week: Chicago-Hyde Park, IL-DuSable Museum of African American History

At first glance, the DuSable Museum of African American History appears pretty modest, especially for a city rich in history like Chicago. You will be happy you stopped once you walk through the doors and begin touring the galleries. The first floor includes several permanent and extended period displays while the ground floor hosts the special exhibit area and auditorium. In a few years the museum is planning a major expansion and plans to incorporate an old park building just to the south of the museum. If you need some exercise, Washington Park is right next door.

Destination of the Week: Quad Cities, IA-Figge Art Museum

Destination of the Week: Quad Cities, IA-Figge Art Museum

In a downtown full of mostly early 20th Century buildings, the Figge’s modernist building stands out. Fortunately the collection is nearly as bold and accessible as the building. Making lemonade out of lemons, the museum currently houses the University of Iowa’s relocated art collection, forced to move due to a 2008 flood. Just do not plan to grab a bite to eat as the restaurant space is dark. In case you are not listening to the guide, start at the top floor and work down.
